Count that Badminton

An Olympic Badminton Racket has approximately 25 strings in total. When these strings intersect they form squares. This means that there is approximately 250 squares on the racket. Take what you know about right angles to figure out how many right angles there are on an entire badminton racket.

hint a right angle=90 degrees.

Million Dollar Michael's Massive Magnificent Motions

On average, every swim stroke Michael Phelps takes gets him 2 meters down the pool. Michael competed in 8 separate events during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing:

  • 400 meter individual medley
  • 4x100 meter freestyle relay
  • 200 meter freestyle
  • 200 meter butterfly
  • 4x200 meter freestyle relay
  • 200 meter individual medley
  • 100 meter butterfly
  • 4x100 meter medley relay
In total, how many meters did Michael swim for his gold medals?

Finally, how many strokes did Michael have to take in total for all of his events combined if Michael can propel himself 2 meters with each stroke?

Figure It Out

People all over the world use different units of measurement. Since the Olympic Games are an international event, the metric system is used for measuring distances and speeds in all of the various sports events.

Using the knowledge that 1 meter = 3.28 feet, convert the following into feet:

Apolo Anton Ohno is preparing for the 500 meter dash, short track event. He is wondering how many feet the race is equal to, a unit of measurement he is much more familiar with growing up in the United States of America.

Emilie Heymans of Canada is studying the platform she must dive off of in her upcoming 10 meter final event in the woman's diving competition. How many feet high is this platform?

Now go the other way! Convert the following into meters using the same conversion method:

  1. Beezie Madden riding Authentic in the individual horse jumping event, has measured five different sized jumps in the course: 4 feet, 5 feet, 6, feet, 7 feet and 8 feet. Help Pius Schwitzer of Switzerland convert these measurements into meters, a unit she uses in Europe.

  2. Bahamian, Pauline Davis-Thompson, won the gold metal in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece in a sprinting event that was 656 feet long. How many meters is this event?

You Decide

Before U.S. Olympian Shawn Johnson, gets on the balance beam she would like to know how long it is, so that she can preform a routine. You notice that the beam is 16 ruler lengths. She now wants to know,

A. How many inches is that?

B. How many feet is it?

C. How many centemeters?

Remember 1foot=12 inches.
