Go for the Gold!

In the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, the United States won the overall medal count. Notice that that they won this with out having the most gold medals, showing that the amount of golds did not effect the overall winner.

Using the graph below, answer the following questions:

  • What country won the most gold medals? The most silver medals? And what about the bronze?

  • How far away was Norway from winning? And how far was Canada who ending up in third place from winning on their home turf?

CANCanada147526
CANNorway98623

Now analyze the graphs below that represent the total medals won by men and then woman in different countries.

  • Notice how many medals overall were won by the men and compare this figure to the amount won by the woman from the USA. Name the fractions that can be represented by these amounts using the total overall as the denominator and the men's or woman's totals as the numerator. Try this for some of the other countries in the top five standings. This can help to figure how the final standings came about!
